Version 1.0.1 — Upcoming Release
This is the working changelog for the next PhauksCalc Desktop release. Completed fixes and improvements will be added here as development continues; they are not included in the currently downloadable version.
Changes planned for this release
- First-run legal acknowledgment
Added a one-time legal notice explaining calculation accuracy limitations and the importance of independently verifying results before using them for important decisions. Users must acknowledge the notice to continue.
- Legal notice available from Help
Added a Help menu option to review the legal notice at any time. Acceptance is stored in application settings, with support for requiring acknowledgment again if the notice is materially revised.
- Newton's method square root function (NEWTONSQRT)
Added NEWTONSQRT(value), an alternative square-root calculation using Newton–Raphson (Babylonian) iteration.
- NEWTONSQRT menu and help integration
Added NEWTONSQRT alongside SQRT in the Tools and Help math-function menus, with dedicated documentation, function-list coverage, a SQRT cross-reference, and predictive-text syntax support.
Version 1.0.1 is the planned next release, not a published update. The version and contents may change before publication.

Version 1.0.0 — Initial Public Release
PhauksCalc Desktop 1.0.0 introduces a full-featured calculator built around a simple idea: a text editor that does math.
Instead of entering one calculation at a time, PhauksCalc provides a flexible workspace for writing, editing, evaluating, and reusing calculations. It combines everyday arithmetic with scientific, algebraic, statistical, and engineering tools.
Features and Capabilities
- Free-form calculation editor
Write and edit multiple calculations in a familiar text-editor-style workspace.
- Advanced expression evaluation
Supports arithmetic, parentheses, operator precedence, powers, and complex mathematical expressions.
- Live calculation previews
View results while editing without committing changes to the calculation workspace.
- Scientific mathematics
Includes mathematical constants, scientific notation, and built-in mathematical functions.
- User-defined variables
Assign values to named variables and reuse them throughout calculations.
- Previous-result references
Use previous calculation results in new expressions without manually reentering values.
- Equation solving
Solve equations for unknown values using the integrated mathematical engine.
- Systems of equations
Work with multiple related equations and solve for their unknowns.
- Symbolic simplification
Simplify supported algebraic expressions using the SIMPLIFY command.
- Variable isolation
Rearrange supported equations to isolate a selected variable using ISOLATE.
- Statistical functions
Perform statistical calculations directly within the editor.
- Engineering and conversion tools
Access calculation functions and unit conversions useful for technical work.
- Date and time calculations
Perform supported date- and time-related operations.
- Natural-language-style operators
Use supported word-based operators alongside conventional mathematical notation.
- Flexible text handling
Mix explanatory text with calculations using text-handling options.
- Selected-line execution
Evaluate selected calculations without having to execute the entire workspace.
- Configurable calculation formatting
Adjust numerical display and formatting preferences.
- Integrated help and commands
Access built-in documentation and application commands directly from the editor.
- Calculation history and logs
Review previously executed calculations using the integrated logging tools.
- Cross-platform desktop distribution
Available as Windows installer and portable packages, Fedora RPM, Debian/Ubuntu DEB, Flatpak, and AppImage.
Fixes and Stability Improvements
These improvements were completed during development and testing before the initial public release.
- Calculation preview consistency
Corrected evaluation behavior so previews and submitted calculations use consistent mathematical rules.
- Editor execution reliability
Fixed issues involving Enter-key execution, cursor position, and editing calculations in the middle of a document.
- Selected-text execution
Corrected line and paragraph handling when executing selected portions of a calculation document.
- Equation-solving consistency
Unified handling of equation blocks and ordinary equation-solving operations.
- Symbolic processing conflicts
Removed duplicate symbolic-processing paths that could produce inconsistent behavior.
- Comparison evaluation
Improved handling of Boolean expressions and chained comparisons while preventing previews from unexpectedly changing calculation state.
- Persistent application storage
Corrected settings, calculation logs, and license storage to use appropriate per-user application directories.
- Read-only installation compatibility
Removed the need to copy the executable into a writable directory when running portable Linux AppImage releases.
- Linux packaging reliability
Corrected executable paths, launch permissions, runtime library configuration, and application integration across supported Linux packages.
- Licensing and activation reliability
Improved license-file persistence and validated online purchase-verification error handling and browser-based purchase links.
